After earning a bachelor's degree in human biology from Stanford University, Thomas Schmalzried subsequently obtained a doctor of medicine (MD) from UCLA, following which he completed a surgery internship and orthopaedics residency at the school. In 1991, while training as a Hip and Implant Fellow at Harvard University, Thomas Schmalzried, MD, earned the John Charnley Award from the Hip Society for his paper, "The Mechanism of Loosening of Cemented Acetabular Components in Total Hip Arthroplasty: Analysis of Specimens Retrieved at Autopsy."
Dr. Thomas Schmalzried began working at the Joint Replacement Institute (JRI) in 1991 and has worked in an executive capacity at the Los Angeles, California-based facility ever since. Presently serving as its Medical Director, he conducts research in hip and knee arthritis and arthroplasty in addition to providing surgical care to patients and supervising ancillary staff. In addition to his work at JRI, he is a part-time faculty member at the Harbor-UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Supplementing his expertise in hip and knee pain as well as total knee replacement. Dr. Schmalzried has authored more than 170 scientific manuscripts and serves as Joint Replacement Section Editor for Orthopedics Today. He has also been a Presidential Guest of the Korean Knee Society, Korean Orthopaedic Association, and Japanese Orthopaedic Society.
