About Me
Sudhir Choudhrie, born in 1949 in Delhi, has emerged as an esteemed businessman, currently based in London, with a wide-ranging portfolio that includes healthcare, aviation, and hospitality. In his early years in Delhi, Choudhrie faced the adversity of losing his father, being raised solely by his mother. His academic inclinations led him to the University of Delhi, where he pursued Economics. An interesting facet of his lineage includes a connection to B. K. Kapur, who was at the helm of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for over three decades.

Following his academic pursuits, Choudhrie charted an independent path in business, diverging from the family's real estate ventures. He showcased his business prowess by tapping into India's burgeoning television sector, leading to the establishment of the Magnum International Trading Company Ltd in 1975. Recognizing his contributions, Theresa May awarded him the "Asian Business Lifetime Achievement Year Award" in 2013. Alongside his business ventures, Choudhrie has been a beacon of philanthropy. His contributions to Green Templeton College and the Columbia University Medical Center underscore his commitment to education and medical advancement. On the personal front, Choudhrie, married to Anita and a father to two, underwent a significant medical procedure in 1999 — a heart transplant, showcasing his resilience and determination.

Choudhrie's varied interests extend into the world of art and vintage cars, boasting an impressive collection that reflects his passion. This love for art culminated in the foundation of the Stellar International Art Foundation in 2008. Politically, Choudhrie has been a steadfast supporter of the UK Liberal Democrats, with his contributions and expertise earning him an advisory role to Tim Farron in 2015, underscoring his profound influence and dedication in every sphere of life.

The Heartbeat of Sudhir Choudhrie — Overcoming Medical Challenges and Thriving

The Heartbeat of Sudhir Choudhrie — Overcoming Medical Challenges and Thriving

As an entrepreneur and philanthropist, Sudhir Choudhrie is a pillar of success in the business sector. But his road to prominence wasn’t without challenges, which he readily shares to illustrate how overcoming hardships is possible — even those that seem insurmountable, “I was identified as having a heart defect when I was 8 years old,” he shared in an op-ed in the Huffington Post. “My mother decided to take out an insurance policy on me and for that you needed a medical. She took me for a totally standard procedure with the insurance company doctor, which was expected to be little more than a formality — but it wasn’t.”

During that visit, the doctor noticed an irregularity in the young boy’s heartbeat. And, Choudhrie said, “What followed was a lifetime of health problems, mainly prompted by a leaky valve in the heart.”

While Choudhrie continued to grow, study, and work toward building a wildly successful export business, his health condition always cast a shadow over his achievements, especially as he suffered two heart attacks and the loss of his brother Rajiv — also to heart disease — in 1997.

The following year, Choudhrie recalled, “My heart reached a breaking point. Both sides of my heart were failing, meaning I had a lot of fluid in my belly, which made the operation harder. I was a bit malnourished; the pressure in my lungs was very, very high and the pressure in the rest of my body was very low, which is the worst combination possible.”

In short, he explained, his health “had reached a total crisis … I probably had a couple of hundred beats of the heart left.”

His only hope was an immediate heart transplant. Luckily, in 1999, Sudhir Choudhrie received that transplant at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, receiving the ultimate gift from a 20-year-old organ donor. His transplant doctor was Dr. Mehmet Oz, known for his television show.

At the time of his transplant, the procedure was quite experimental. The first-ever heart transplant was performed in 1967, and that patient died just 18 days after his surgery.

In the ensuing years, techniques improved and in the wake of Sudhir Choudhrie’s lifesaving operation, he survived and thrived, vowing to make a difference in the field of cardiology as a way of paying forward his gratitude. As his wife, Anita, said, “Following his transplant, he made two promises: that he would be a force of positive energy and that he would touch the lives of donors and recipients with his insights.” In keeping with those promises, Choudhrie has spent the years since his transplant serving as a financial resource for advances in cardiac care and research, an advocate for increasing the ranks of willing organ donors, and a beacon of hope and support for transplant patients and the families who love and care for them.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

Today, Sudhir Choudhrie is one of the longest-living heart transplant survivors, and he considers that a privilege and a responsibility. To repay that debt of gratitude, Sudhir and his family endowed an associate professor’s cardiology chair at Columbia University, helping advance research into transplants and other care options available to patients with heart failure.

In 2010, the Choudhrie Family Foundation was established, which supports research and education projects related to cardiovascular medicine. In 2017, the foundation funded an exhibit at London’s Science Museum, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first heart transplant. Following the opening of the exhibit , Choudhrie announced his support for the #OrgansWill campaign in the USA, which aims to recruit 62,500 new donors, potentially saving 500,000 lives.

More important than money, however, is the hope Choudhrie can give to other transplant patients by sharing his own story. He’s the author of the book From My Heart: A Tale of Life, Love, and Destiny, in which he shares his life story, from diagnosis to transplant and beyond, as a source of inspiration for others who must walk his path.

On its own, having created this resource would be a valuable contribution. However, Choudhrie has also become a vocal transplant advocate, regularly sharing words of encouragement. As he said, “I have written a book about my own experiences to show that there is life beyond the operating table.”

Moreover, he’s taken the opportunity to engage with his community of cardiac disease sufferers, noting, “I have met inspirational people who have had a transplant and whose attitude and ambition has been breathtaking, including a woman running a marathon, but equally I have met people who threw away the opportunities they had been given by adopting a negative and pessimistic attitude.

“Once I was in a room with six other transplant patients and they were saying that they didn’t want to do anything to protect their health as they didn’t expect to live for very long. One man refused to give up junk food saying, ‘Why should I? I’m going to die anyway.’”

In response, Sudhir Choudhrie has made it his mission to combat this kind of attitude and infuse more hope where it’s been sorely lacking. To his fellow transplant recipients, he gives this encouragement: “We’re all going to die one day. But if you are fortunate enough to receive top-quality care, as I did, then you have every chance of making it through. Mine is a message of hope. Surrounded by a loving family, cherished by all of them, one thing is quite clear. If your heart has a reason to keep beating, it will.”

Heart-to-Heart: Sudhir Choudhrie’s Inspirational Journey from the Operating Room to the Boardroom
20 Nov 2023

Being one of the world’s longest-living heart transplant patients isn’t a record anyone aspires to — but it’s one for which entrepreneur and philanthropist Sudhir Choudhrie is eternally grateful. In the business world, where extraordinary tales of resilience and success abound, Sudhir Choudhrie’s journey is a true testament to the power of the human spirit. From the operating room, where he underwent a grueling, lifesaving heart transplant, to the boardroom, where he built an empire, Choudhrie’s life story resonates as an awe-inspiring symphony of determination, vision, and triumph.

In 1999, at 50, Choudhrie received the gift of life from an organ donor. This transformative event marked the beginning of a new chapter that would inspire countless others.

A 20-year-old person I will never know not only gave me a new heart: they gave me a new life,” Choudhrie wrote in a HuffPost blog post. “In many ways, my quality of life is better now than it was in my late forties when I was feeling lethargic and constantly prone to infections as my health and my old heart gradually started to break down.”

Sudhir Choudhrie: Against All Odds

Choudhrie’s background as a cardiac patient endowed him with a profound understanding of the value of time and the urgency of purpose. Drawing upon his astute instincts and boundless determination, Sudhir Choudhrie became a trailblazer in entrepreneurship.

In 1999, Choudhrie had to have an emergency transplant. He was in New York City at the Columbia University Medical Center. The operation was performed by TV personality and physician Mehmet Oz, who discussed it on The Dr. Oz Show. At the time, Choudhrie was expected to live only a few more months without this procedure.

Sudhir Choudhrie chronicled his journey in a memoir titled From My Heart: A Tale of Life, Love,

and Destiny, which received rave reviews on Amazon. Verified purchaser Carrie wrote, “What an inspiring story — not having much knowledge when it comes to organ donation, after watching the segment on Dr. Oz and reading this book, the only question I have now is — how can you not be part of something so powerful. A great read — and a fabulous message.”

Reader K wise agreed, posting, “Such a touching and powerful story that you must read. The book touched my heart and opened my eyes to organ donation, transplant surgery, and the patents. Sudhir — Thank you for sharing your story, as this book has changed my perspective on life.”

Paying it Forward

Grateful for his second lease on life, Sudhir Choudhrie and his family, via the Choudhrie Family Foundation, established the Sudhir Choudhrie Professorship of Cardiology at Columbia University.

Choudhrie said, “Charity in both the public and the personal sphere underpins what makes us decent, moral beings.” The Choudhrie Family Foundation was founded in 2010 to fund health, medical, and educational projects in the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries. This foundation supports research into cardiovascular medicine and encourages people to sign up to be organ donors.

The Choudhrie Family Foundation’s mission states: “We fund research projects that advance medical understanding, especially projects searching for the causes of genetic cardiovascular disease and a cure for it. We have supported the research of multiple world-leading experts on the causes and cures for cardiovascular disease.”

And that’s a philosophy Sudhir Choudhrie wholeheartedly — pun intended — embraces.

“Once, I was in a room with six other transplant patients, and they were saying that they didn’t want to do anything to protect their health as they didn’t expect to live for very long. One man refused to give up junk food, saying, ‘Why should I? I’m going to die anyway,’” Choudhrie wrote in the HuffPost.
“We’re all going to die one day. But if you are fortunate enough to receive top-quality care, as I did, you can make it through. Mine is a message of hope. Surrounded by a loving family, cherished by all of them, one thing is quite clear. If your heart has a reason to keep beating, it will.
“My hope is that stories like mine can inspire more potential donors. The hearts belonging to the family of my donor must have been shattered by their loss, and yet they rose above their grief to say yes to the procedure that gave me life. My heart, my new heart, swells with a profound emotion at that thought.”
From Delhi to London: Tracing Sudhir Choudhrie’s Meteoric Rise in Global Business
20 Nov 2023

Soon after he graduated from the University of Delhi, freshly degreed in economics, Sudhir Choudhrie started buying television equipment from the U.K., noting, “There was a big craze for setting up television centers, so I started getting equipment from the U.K. to sell to the government” in India.

In doing so, he not only helped grow the country’s national TV network, but he also “really got into the business,” he explained. From there, he expanded into other imports and exports, focusing on consumer goods such as farm machinery. And just like that, Choudhrie found his footing as a successful entrepreneur.

By 1975, the business was well established, and Choudhrie founded the Magnum International Trading Company, concentrating solely on expanding his Indian exports. Over the next few decades, his vision for cementing India’s position in the global economy turned to new avenues and ventures. And that’s when his reach truly started to expand.

Sudhir Choudhrie Goes Global

At this stage of his career, Sudhir Choudhrie formed two key partnerships that took his native country — and his business empire — to global recognition. First, he connected with Taj Hotels and Resorts, creating four resorts in India under the Taj Kerala brand. These proved to be popular destinations for both locals and international tourists, cementing the entrepreneur’s credibility in the hospitality industry.

In 1995, he was ready to venture into the world of fashion. He formed the Adidas Indian Trading branch of the Adidas AG athletic apparel and footwear corporation, soon bringing more than 180 of the brand’s stores to India, along with numerous manufacturing facilities.

Over the next few years, his business endeavors kept expanding as Choudhrie assumed a non-Executive Directorship role at Ebookers PLC, a U.K.-based online travel company, and then invested in Air Deccan, the first budget airline in India. At the time of his investment in 2003, the airline was tiny — and only owned one plane — but just five years later, it had transformed into a major regional carrier, operating more than 200 daily flights.

In the midst of all this professional success, Sudhir Choudhrie’s health concerns finally caught up with him. He suffered two heart attacks, experienced heart failure, and received a lifesaving heart transplant at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, under the care of Dr. Mehmet Oz. Now, with a new heart in his body, his wife, Anita, explained, “Following his transplant, [Sudhir promised] that he would be a force of positive energy.” And so, in keeping with that promise, Choudhrie entered a new phase of his storied career.

Growth and Giving

While he became a British national in 2010, Choudhrie is still very much a global player, engaged in everything from utilities companies in the Middle East, to assisting with strategic relations between his native India and adopted U.K., and even financially supporting the U.K.’s Liberal Democrats party. For his business prowess, he was honored with the Asian Business Lifetime Achievement Year Award 2013, presented by U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May. But that wasn’t the end of his story.

To this day, the entrepreneur remains actively engaged in business, politics, and — perhaps most passionately — philanthropy. Valued as a global consultant who helps clients target growth, risk management, and vision, he’s also a passionate advocate for organ donation, a celebrated author, and a staunch supporter of causes ranging from education to support for individuals with disabilities. And, as one of the world’s longest living heart-transplant survivors, Sudhir Choudhrie is still going strong, so there are likely so many more chapters to come in this visionary’s narrative.

Exploring Sudhir Choudhrie’s Magnificent Vintage Car Collection | Did You Know Cars
09 Nov 2023

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Sudhir Choudhrie is widely appreciated for his business acumen, generous charity work, and his status as one of the world’s longest-living heart transplant survivors. But here’s a fun — and lesser-known — fact about Choudhrie: His vintage car collection is one of the largest in the world.

Choudhrie noted in the Huffington Post, “I collect vintage cars — defined as any car built before December 1939 — and I have been lucky enough to acquire a substantial collection since buying my first one in 1980.” While the physical acquisitions started then, he explained, “My love affair with vintage cars goes all the way back to my childhood. I fell in love with them when I was 6 or 7 years old, growing up in India, [where I] began collecting Dinky toys and Matchbox cars.”

As the years passed, he continued, “When I was at college, I went to vintage car rallies and, in later years, my wife, Anita, took part in races and won plenty of them — so it really has been a lifelong love affair.”

Many wealthy people have expensive hobbies. But for Sudhir Choudhrie, his collection is about so much more than showing off his ability to amass possessions. Instead, he reflected, “The special appeal of vintage cars … [is] the simplicity of the engineering, combined with the quality.” Furthermore, his collection isn’t just for show. Choudhrie loves the challenge of restoring additions to his vintage car collection, a delicate process that can take as long as a decade. And, with at least 37 cars in his collection as of 2017, that’s a major time investment.

Still, the collector is thrilled to put in the time and effort, as he explained, “We are planning to build a car museum, which will sit alongside an art gallery exhibiting our collection of Indian art, a hotel, and a convention center. It will be a place to mix business and pleasure. Vintage cars have given me so much pleasure over the years and I plan to put my collection in a trust so they can be enjoyed by generations to come. For me, the prewar period was the real heyday of the motorcar and this is a way to ensure it is never forgotten.”

Of course, this vision is still a few years away. But, for those who want a peek at Choudhrie’s autos right now? Here’s a rundown of some of the jewels in his collection.

Inside Sudhir Choudhrie’s International Vintage Car Collection

Admiring Choudhrie’s vintage vehicles feels a little like taking a tour around the globe. Among his 37 cars are magnificent models from some of the world’s finest manufacturers of motor vehicles.

Germany

Sudhir Choudhrie began his automotive world tour in Germany. He said, “My first vintage car was a 1938 convertible Mercedes” 320 Cabriolet D that he purchased for 50,000 rupees (approximately $600, worth around $11,000 today) back in 1980. He notes that the four-door Mercedes-Benz was “in a terrible condition, with cats living in it,” only to discover much later that the car was custom-built and thus worth a far greater sum.

Not wanting his ’38 Benz to stand alone, Choudhrie also counts a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 170V Sedan W among his collection, a car whose four-cylinder engine and powerful four-speed transmission made it notable for the era.

United States

Moving across the pond, Sudhir Choudhrie has several American cars in his collection, including both 1900- and 1902-era Cadillacs. Interestingly, he acquired the U.S.-made cars in Europe from a British estate manager who lived in southern India, proving that his passion for vintage cars — much like his business and philanthropic endeavors — spans borders.

Italy

Getting back to the European roots of his collection, Sudhir Choudhrie added a vivid yellow Fiat 514 to his garage, notable for its 1930 vintage, remarkable curves, and striking black top.

France

Finally, France is one of the best-represented countries in Choudhrie’s vintage car collection. One of his most impressive examples of French ingenuity is a Marc Birkigt-designed 1927 Hispano-Suiza H6B, crafted with a straight-six engine inspired by the aviation industry.

He also owns a 1903 Cottereau Voiturine originally owned by the Maharaja of Patiala, and one of the first cars ever imported to India. Alongside this vintage vehicle sits a 1914 Darracq Type V with an inline four-cylinder side-valve engine and a four-speed transmission. Rounding out the French portion of Sudhir Choudhrie’s collection is a 1920s-era Bugatti, bought from a family who imported the vehicle into India as a gift for their son. Unfortunately, related Choudhrie, “He became blind and was never able to drive it.”

The result? Choudhrie said, “The car was kept in a garage but the roof fell in and the car was badly smashed. It has taken more than 10 years to restore and there’s still another year of work to be done.” Undeterred by the length of the process or by the fact that “it took three years just to get permission to send the engine to the U.K. to get it rebuilt,” Choudhrie vows to complete the project by installing that engine.

After all, as Sudhir’s wife Anita explained, her husband’s willingness to go above and beyond when restoring his vintage collection is because, “For him, it’s a real labor of love.” Viewed in this light, putting in those extra miles is only natural.

Over two decades have passed since Sudhir’s life-saving heart transplant, making him one of the longest-surviving heart transplant patients in the world. This remarkable milestone has shed light on the role of the titin gene, which has been linked to heart failure. Sudhir’s discovery of this gene in his family has led to increased awareness and early testing for heart dysfunction, potentially saving lives in the process.

At the age of 71, this renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist has faced numerous challenges, including a serious health condition. However, Choudhrie has not only overcome these obstacles but also dedicated his life to making a positive impact on others.

Born in 1949 in Delhi, India, Sudhir Choudhrie faced adversity from an early age. His father’s untimely demise left him under the care of his mother, who became an influential role model in his life. At the tender age of eight, Choudhrie underwent a medical examination that revealed a rare heart condition. Despite the looming threat of heart failure, he never allowed it to hinder his path to success.

After graduating from high school with exceptional grades, Choudhrie secured admission to the University of Delhi, where he earned a degree in economics. He later ventured into the business world, working as the Executive Director of Magnum Trading Company Ltd in 1975, helping the company explore India’s emerging export market. His journey led him to diverse industries, including tourism with Taj Hotels and Resorts and a stint with Adidas AG in 1995. Choudhrie’s entrepreneurial spirit also led him to invest heavily in Air Deccan, which eventually became India’s major budget airline within five years.

The Life-Saving Transplant

While Sudhir Choudhrie achieved remarkable success in his career, his health battles persisted. He suffered two heart attacks and witnessed a gradual deterioration in his well-being. Eventually, Choudhrie had to confront the pressing need for a heart transplant. Genetic testing revealed that he carried the titin gene mutation, significantly increasing his risk of premature heart failure.

In 1999, against all odds, a compatible donor heart became available, giving Choudhrie a second chance at life. The surgery, performed by renowned heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, proved to be a turning point. However, Choudhrie’s journey to recovery was not without its challenges. He underwent therapy to address the visions he experienced after the surgery, emerging with a positive outlook and a renewed determination to make the most of his second chance.

Through this organization, the family supports medical projects and health education programs globally, including the #OrgansWill campaign in the U.S., which aims to secure 62,500 new organ donors and save 500,000 lives. Choudhrie’s philanthropic efforts extend beyond organ donation, as he actively engages with charities in the medical and education sectors, particularly in India, the U.S., and the U.K.

Legacy and Book

To share his remarkable journey and insights, Sudhir Choudhrie penned a book titled “From My Heart: A Tale of Life, Love, and Destiny.” This international bestseller on Amazon explores his transplant experience and life thereafter. The book emphasizes the notion that a transplant is not the end but the beginning of a new lease on life. Choudhrie draws inspiration from fellow transplant recipients who have exhibited remarkable ambition and positivity, including a woman who ran a marathon after her own transplant surgery.

However, he also highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to maximize the benefits of a transplant. Choudhrie emphasizes the significance of adopting a nutritious diet, as it prolongs the life of a transplanted heart and reduces the likelihood of needing a second transplant.

The Glory of Goodwood Revival through the Eyes of Sudhir Choudhrie
07 Jun 2023

Sudhir Choudhrie, a renowned business magnate and an avid vintage car collector, has long been smitten by the charm and elegance of the Goodwood Revival. This historic motorsport event, staged at the spiritual home of British motor racing, is attended by sell-out crowds in period dress, reviving the heyday of racing and the romance and glamour of a bygone era. Yet, Choudhrie’s interest delves deeper into the realm of vintage cars.

Sudhir Choudhrie and the Glory of Goodwood

“The event’s attraction is obvious: beautiful cars on the track; tweeds and trilbies” Choudhrie explains in a blog post, expressing his admiration for the Goodwood Revival. “It pays homage to a post-war era when everything seemed simpler and driving was a more carefree experience.” Yet, for Choudhrie, this nostalgia goes beyond the charming ambiance of Goodwood; his love affair with vintage cars stretches back to his childhood.

Sudhir Choudhrie, known for his substantial collection of vintage cars-defined as any car built before December 1939-has been on this journey since buying his first vintage car, a 1938 convertible Mercedes, in 1980. The car, though in terrible condition when he acquired it, was a special find, later discovered to be custom-built.

The true value of vintage cars, according to Choudhrie, lies not in their monetary worth but in their historical significance and craftsmanship. “I think it’s the simplicity of the engineering, combined with the quality,” he writes. He boasts some of the earliest vintage cars, including Cadillacs from 1900 and 1902 and a 1906 Rover.

The Joys and Challenges of Restoring Vintage Cars

Yet, Sudhir Choudhrie doesn’t stop at mere acquisition; the restoration of these vintage cars is equally appealing. Choudhrie sees this process as a challenge, requiring ingenuity, patience, and sometimes luck to source original parts. But that makes it all the more satisfying. “Another attraction is the challenge of restoring a vintage car to its original condition,” he writes. “It’s a labour of love which can easily take five or six years, in some cases more than 10 years.”

These vintage treasures, a collection of 37 cars, reside in a garage in Delhi, maintained by a dedicated team of seven mechanics. Choudhrie dreams of sharing this collection with the world. “We are planning to build a car museum, which will sit alongside an art gallery exhibiting our collection of Indian art, a hotel, and convention centre,” he revealed in his blog post. This planned endeavour perfectly encapsulates Choudhrie’s mantra to mix business with pleasure.

A Lasting Legacy

For Sudhir Choudhrie, vintage cars are more than just relics from the past; they represent a timeless value, craftsmanship, and the spirit of a bygone era. His interest, far exceeding the classic cars on display at the Goodwood Revival, is in the real heyday of the motor car: the pre-war period. His collection, planned to be put in a Trust, promises to be a tribute to that era, ensuring that it will never be forgotten.

Indeed, the Goodwood Revival, among the world’s most renowned historic motorsport events, shares a similar ethos. Recently, the festival has been making strides in engaging younger audiences, all while maintaining its commitment to honouring the glamour and grandeur of the golden age of motor racing.

Yet, as the Revival continues to captivate audiences with its resplendent display of post-war classics, Sudhir Choudhrie quietly cultivates his collection of pre-war gems. His aim is not only to keep these beautiful machines in running order but also to share their stories, their histories, and their link to an era of daring innovation and elegant simplicity.

While Sudhir Choudhrie cherishes the past, he also keeps an eye on the future. His planned car museum, convention centre, and art gallery are not merely to house his impressive collection but to serve as a hub for enthusiasts, historians, and the curious. This hub aims to offer a blend of educational exploration and a space for like-minded individuals to share their passion for vintage automobiles.

In his blog post, Choudhrie recounts the intriguing story of his 1921/1923 Bugatti model, which was imported into India by a Bombay-based umbrella manufacturing family. This tale is a testament to the rich history encapsulated in each of these vintage vehicles. “The stories behind the cars are often very interesting too,” Choudhrie writes.

Through his commitment to restoration and preservation, Sudhir Choudhrie stands as a steward of history, a passionate individual who appreciates the beauty of a bygone era and works diligently to ensure its stories continue to be told.
