About Me
Pareena Lawrence is a respected presence in the academic sphere who has held leadership positions with institutions such as Augustana College and the University of Minnesota, Morris. In her present role as a visiting scholar at Yale University, Pareena Lawrence is pursuing research as a scholar at the MacMillan Center on the impact of gender-based public policy in Northern Indian on elected female officials, in the governance process and in outcomes for grassroots development efforts.
Dr. Lawrence completed her studies in economics at the University of Delhi and subsequently earned a master’s and a Ph.D. degree from Purdue University. In her doctoral work, she focused on Sub-Saharan Africa, and her fields of study included international development economics and econometrics. In 2018, she was recognized by her alma mater through the John S. Day Distinguished Alumni Academic Service Award for her many accomplishments in academic administration.
Dr. Lawrence’s background includes responsibilities with the University of Minnesota, Morris, in several roles, including division chair of social sciences. She oversaw all aspects of curriculum development, including new program creation, within a division spanning 11 departments. In addition to increasing research abroad opportunities for students, she helped facilitate a program in tandem with the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. In 2006, Pareena Lawrence received the Cesar Chavez Award for her sustained contributions to communities of color and her efforts in support of workers’ rights.
