Based in New York City, Michael Gould-Wartofsky is a doctoral candidate who expects to receive his PhD in sociology in May 2020. His research interests include urban sociology, immigration, policing and punishment, among others. Michael Gould-Wartofsky published his first book, The Occupiers: The Making of the 99 Percent Movement, with Oxford University Press in 2015, and is now working on his second. Most recently, he won the award for best graduate student paper from the Society for the Study of Social Problems for his study of sanctuary cities. He has also published numerous articles for public outlets, including with The Huffington Post, The Nation, Jacobin, Salon, The Washington Post, Salon, and others.
In addition to his writing and academic work, Michael Gould-Wartofsky is an experienced educator who has taught courses ranging from introduction to sociology to advanced sociological theory. He has also given invited lectures and presentations across the country, including at Harvard, Georgetown, the Carter Center, and other venues.
