A Lacey Township High School alumnus, John Syers of Forked River, New Jersey, joined the Elizabeth Fire Department in 2017. In addition to suppressing fires and executing technical rescues, he contributes to maintenance of facilities, equipment, and vehicles. A former student at both Ocean County College and Ocean County Vocational Technical School, John Syers trained as a hazmat technician and emergency medical technician (EMT).
Prior to joining the Elizabeth Fire Department, Mr. Syers spent 5 years as foreman of Alborn Mulch Supply in Toms River, New Jersey, where he operated heavy equipment, solved mechanical problems, and performed repairs when necessary. Since 2020, he has helped clear trees and maintain job sites as lead mechanic with Tantum Tree Removal.
In his free time, Mr. Syers enjoys a number of water-related hobbies, including fishing, kayaking, and scuba diving. His interests also include cooking and traveling. Active within his community, he maintains membership in the Forked River Republicans Society and the Lacey Moose Lodge.
