About Me
Thomas Gratzer, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than three decades of experience in general and forensic psychiatry. Throughout his career, he has worked with leading hospitals and psychiatric facilities across Minnesota’s Twin Cities region, including Regions Hospital, United Hospital, Fairview University Medical Center, and Psych Recovery. His daily responsibilities include patient treatment, psychiatric consultations, and forensic evaluations involving complex mental health cases.

Dr. Thomas Gratzer has held several significant roles in psychiatry and forensic health. He served as Senior Forensic Psychiatrist at the Minnesota Security Hospital from 1995 through 2002, where he specialized in the assessment and treatment of individuals with serious psychiatric conditions. He later worked as a consulting psychiatrist for the Minnesota Department of Corrections, focusing on mental health care for incarcerated youth and underserved patient populations.

His longstanding commitment to patient care also included more than two decades as an attending psychiatrist at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. During his career, Dr. Gratzer earned recognition for his leadership abilities and served as medical staff president at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. His work consistently reflected a dedication to advancing psychiatric treatment standards and supporting effective mental health services within institutional environments.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Gratzer built a strong academic reputation through teaching and mentorship. From 2002 until 2021, he served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He lectured extensively to medical students, psychiatry residents, and law students at institutions such as the University of Manitoba, Regions Hospital, DePaul Law School, and Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Dr. Gratzer also demonstrated notable accomplishments outside medicine through his early involvement in computer science and programming. He won first prize at the Manitoba Science Fair for a computer program and later participated in Prince Philip’s International Science Fortnight in London, England. He coauthored FAST BASIC: Beyond TRS-80 BASIC and contributed to the development of VP-Info, a database programming language that achieved wide commercial success.

In addition to publishing several peer-reviewed papers in forensic psychiatry, Dr. Thomas Gratzer received numerous academic and research honors throughout his career. Born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, he comes from a family deeply connected to education and medicine. Outside his professional responsibilities, he enjoys skiing, tennis, traveling, exercising, and supporting charitable organizations connected to education and mental health initiatives.
