Diezani Alison-Madueke, leader and expert in the Oil and Gas industry in Nigeria, has played a pivotal role in the advancement of Nigeria’s energy industry throughout her career. Alison Madueke held numerous high-level positions during her career across varying sectors, including her 15-year tenure at Shell in which she held several senior positions.
In 2007, Ms. Alison-Madueke took on several high-profile roles in the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, including Minister of Petroleum Resources, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, and Minister of Transportation. She was also the first female President of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). During her time in office, Alison-Madueke was credited for revolutionizing the Nigerian Oil and Gas industry, developing strategic solutions for the country, as well as formulating procedures and setting new policies into motion, such as re-drafting the Petroleum Industry Bill and getting it approved by the Federal Executive Council. Her work resulted in a noticeable increase of indigenous oil and gas production. She also implemented the Nigerian Content Act, significantly boosting the Nigerian economy.
As former Minister of Petroleum Resources and President of OPEC, Alison Madueke strengthened Nigeria’s economic and global presence, partaking in numerous international energy discussions and ensuring Nigeria’s participation in all industry related explorations. She is recognized for her extraordinary efforts to help position Nigeria as a global oil and gas superpower, with Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry ranked as 6th in the world during her tenure – a position which the nation has retained until today.
As the first female president of OPEC, Alison Madueke has broken boundaries, redefining the woman’s presence in traditionally male dominated industries, making her one of the most influential women in Nigeria. An advocate for female empowerment in Africa, Alison Madueke conceptualized the Network of Women in Oil and Gas (NEWOG) in Nigeria, creating a more inclusive workforce within the industry. She has taken great strides in supporting women through mentorship programs and hosting lectures around the world focusing on the oil and gas industry, female empowerment, navigating male dominated industries and sustainability.
Her status and experience as a woman in the Nigerian government has allowed her to become a voice for female empowerment, advocating for higher education, women’s rights in the workforce and a sustainable society. As a member of the Ijaw tribe located in the Niger Delta region, Alison Madueke has further contributed to women’s rights, giving them a voice throughout Nigeria.
After attending Howard University in Washington DC, Diezani Alison Madueke received her BArch in Architecture. And received her MBA from the Judge Institute of Management at the University of Cambridge in the UK. She received the prestigious British Foreign and Commonwealth Chevening Scholarship Award in 2002.
