About Me
Carl Byington is an Atlanta, Georgia-based engineer who draws upon nearly three decades of experience to provide consultation services in the design of prognostics and health management (PHM) systems through PHM Design, LLC. He founded the company in 2017, prior to which he worked for six years as PHM analytics and CBM+ system lead at Sikorsky Aircraft, where he won several multi-million dollar United States Air Force (USAF) program awards and served as design lead on those and other programs. Carl Byington spent the prior decade as Director of Systems Engineering at Impact Technologies, LLC.

While working for Impact Technologies, Carl Byington designed PHM solutions for aircraft, shipboard, and land-based applications for the United States Air Force, United States Navy, and the United States Army. He served as Principal Investigator on more than 70 programs, including "Oil Quality Analysis System for Army Ground Vehicles" and "Shaft Coupling PHM Using Accelerometer Data", which was applied to the F-35 PHM program.

Carl Byington also served as Department Head of Condition-based Maintenance at Penn State Applied Research Laboratory, and as Research Engineer in Power and Mechanical Systems Department. He has additional experience as a Rocket Scientist at NASA Langley Research Center.

Carl possesses a Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from George Washington University and a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned the Francis G. Tatnall Prize for the Most Outstanding Senior Design Project.

  • Carl Byington provides consultation, mentoring and training services in Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) Design areas. He provides system engineering review, data analytics design assessment, PHM architecture development, business strategy and other services.
  • Carl was the Principal Investigator and Technical Lead for USAF CBM+ Pilot Programs with multiple program offices. He led multiple Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS)_technology improvement programs for H-60 and S-92 commercial helicopters. He led the design of PHM for drivetrain, engine, and structural systems.
  • Performed as the Principal Investigator on more that 70 Phase I, II, and III Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contracts and contributed to a Tibbetts Award. We received regular placement in the Rochester Top 100 and Inc. 5000, among other notable awards.
    Carl Byington's efforts led to a successful acquisition of the company by Sikorsky Aircraft.
