Alison Schrag is a partner at Sherman Atlas Sylvester & Stamelman LLP, where her legal practice centers on trusts and estates planning and administration. With years of experience, she helps clients navigate estate-related matters, including drafting wills and trusts, estate tax considerations, and resolving legal disputes involving inheritance. Her work also includes representing individuals in litigation involving contested accountings and probate issues.
She is admitted to practice in both New York and New Jersey and began her legal journey at a firm where she handled litigation involving financial institutions and corporate trustees. Over time, her focus shifted toward estate law, and she later became a partner at a boutique law firm specializing in trusts and estates in New York City, before joining her current firm.
In her current role, she advises clients on preserving wealth, planning for incapacity, and structuring estates to minimize tax obligations. She works with a wide range of clients, including business owners and individuals with multi-generational assets or charitable goals. Her attention to detail helps ensure that plans align with the client’s objectives and reduce the risk of future legal disputes among heirs.
She also regularly appears in Surrogate’s Court on behalf of clients involved in probate proceedings, estate administration, and kinship determinations. She assists heirs in establishing their legal rights through genealogical evidence and guides executors and trustees as they carry out their responsibilities. Her courtroom experience enhances her estate planning work, as she understands the potential challenges that may arise during the administration of an estate.
Outside of her client work, she is an active speaker on estate and tax planning topics. She presents to financial advisors and their clients on key subjects, including revocable versus irrevocable trusts, beneficiary designations, fiduciary duties, and recent developments in estate law. These sessions aim to give clients a better understanding of how to plan effectively for the future.
She graduated with honors from Colgate University and earned her law degree from Brooklyn Law School, where she contributed to the law review and participated in moot court. Her service extends into the community, as well. She has volunteered as a crisis counselor and continues to participate in local charitable initiatives.
Alison Schrag lives in New York City with her husband and two sons. She balances her legal work with time spent outdoors, traveling, and volunteering in her community.
Alison Schrag earned her BA from Colgate University where she graduated with honors and her JD from Brooklyn Law School. During law school, she served as an editor of the Brooklyn Law Review and was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society.
