With a background in medicine spanning two decades, Dr. Sukumar Nagendran serves as chief medical officer and senior vice president with AveXis, Inc., and guides a full range of medical affairs and clinical development activities. Dr. Sukumar Nagendran’s work with AveXis spans ongoing gene therapy and related pipeline programs.
Originally from Sri Lanka, Dr. Nagendran finished his second MBBS course of studies at North Colombo Medical College prior to leaving for the United States and completing biochemistry studies at Rutgers University and graduating magna cum laude. Receiving his doctor of medicine from the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, he graduated first in his class and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.
Dr. Nagendran's advanced training includes an internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he treated rare diseases under the guidance of thought leaders in the field. Following years of private practice, he joined Pfizer, Inc., and directed the U.S. diabetes field medical team. His pharmaceutical development efforts involved key drugs such as torcetrapib and atorvastatin. Dr. Sukumar Nagendran also has leadership experience with Novartis International AG and Daiichi Sankyo Company, Ltd.
